MANILA – A crack on its hull caused a cargo vessel to sink while anchored at a shore in Talisay City in Cebu province.
None of the 26 crew members on board MV Fortuner were hurt while the possibility of an oil spill was being determined, according to the Philippine Coast Guard.
Fortuner, a vessel registered to Sam Shipping Company, Inc. based in Talamban, Cebu, was carrying steel pellets when it sank around 6:30 a.m. on Sunday, said Armand Balilo, Coast Guard spokesperson.
“The crew members attempted to fix the crack, but water continued to stream into the ship’s compartment,” Balilo said. “The Coast Guard sent ships to the Talisay port to prevent an oil spill.”
The Coast Guard Cebu station was still investigating the incident to determine what caused the crack on the hull. “[They] are [reaching] the owner of the cargo for more information,” Balilo said.
An oil spill boom was also set up after an estimated 25-meter oil sheen was discovered.
Coastguards were trying to prevent an oil spill while recovering the sunken vessel as of press time./PN
