AFTER the University of the Philippines Maroons and Far Eastern University Tamaraws, it’s now reigning UAAP men’s basketball champion De La Salle University Green Archers’ turn to play in Iloilo City.
A source told the Buzzer Beater that the Green Archers will be participating in a four-team pocket tournament in August as part of their bid to defend the UAAP championship.
However, the same source is still clueless on who the Green Archers will face as the organizer of the pocket basketball tournament is still busy inviting teams who wish to participate.
Green Archers head coach Aldin Ayo has recently said they are eyeing to participate in at least seven pre-season tournaments to toughen up his squad for the UAAP season.
“Kulang na kulang kami sa laro. Hindi pa lumalabas yung mga laro ng mga bata e. Although pag nagpa-practice kami game-face naman yung tira nila pero iba pa rin yung actual game,” Ayo said.
“Siguro pag nakadami na kaming laro baka makuha na yung shooting touch. Kaya nga yung plano namin ngayon naka-linya sa amin six to seven tournaments before the UAAP para lumabas talaga yugn tunay na laro ng mga bata,” he added.

Jake Bornea renewed his mastery over Renerio Arizala with an eighth round technical knockout win to claim the World Boxing Federation (WBF) Intercontinental super flyweight belt on Friday night at the Waterfront Insular Hotel in Davao City.
This marks the second time the General Santos-native Bornea has defeated Arizala after scoring a unanimous decision verdict on April 2016 for the World Boxing Organization (WBO) Asia Pacific Youth flyweight title.
The victory was also a fitting bounce back for Bornea after suffering a technical knockout loss in his first out-of-the-country match against flyweight champion Andrew Selby of the United Kingdom at the latter’s hometown on November 2016.
“From the start, my mindset was not take him lightly because I know that will be facing a much better Arizala this time,” said Bornea. “I am satisfied with my performance but I won’t stop improving my game.”
With the victory, the 21-year-old Bornea improved his record to 12-2-0 with six stoppage victories, while the 23-year-old Arizala suffered his fifth consecutive defeat to slide down to 13-7-1 with five knockout wins.
The Bornea-Arizala headlined boxing card was the culminating event of the 3rd Games and Amusements Board (GAB) Philippine Boxing Convention, which was attended by the boxing promoters, managers and ring officials of the Philippines.
“I am glad that Jake was able to bounce back with this win. He prepared hard for Renerio even if he has beaten him before,” Bornea’s promoter Jim Claude Manangquil said. “It is also a great time for Jake to showcase his talent.”
Bornea’s stablemate Raymond Tabugon also scored a victory against Jetly Purisima in the undercard of the bout presented by Manangquil and Raides Neri’s Sanman Promotions and MB Boxing Promotions of Jilson Basang./PN
