MANILA – The Gilas Pilipinas showed its aggressiveness from start to finish to score a lopsided 147-40 victory over Myanmar at the start of the 2017 SEABA Cup on Friday night at the Smart-Araneta Coliseum.
Calvin Abueva led the way with 22 points, six rebounds, five steals and four assists for the Gilas, which is seeking to dominate the tournament to earn a ticket to the 2017 FIBA-Asia Cup.
Allein Maliksi added 20 markers, while Roger Pogoy, June Mar Fajardo, Jiovani Jalalon and Matthew Wright added 17, 14, 13 and 12 points, respectively, for the Chooks To Go-backed national squad.
“We just wanted to make sure we are coming out and playing the game the right way,” said Gilas head coach Chot Reyes. “We told the players, a lot of times in international competition, tayo ang dehado. It’s very rare we come to a game na tayo ang llamado.”
The Gilas was on point in their shooting as they raced to a 17-0 score on baskets by Maliksi and Pogoy. The lead grew to 64-12 at halftime with contributions from Abueva, Jalalon and Raymond Almazan.
Gilas continued its domination in the second half with three-pointers from Wright, Maliksi, Abueva and Pogoy to build its largest lead of the match at 107 points on free throws by Pogoy.
Aung Wana led the way with 12 points, while Myat Phyo Aung added eight points and eight rebounds for Myanmar, which looks to bounce back against Vietnam this afternoon.
After handily beating its first two opponents, the Gilas men’s basketball team will be gunning for its third straight victory when it faces the Malaysian national team at 7 p.m. tonight./PN
