MANILA – Samjosef Belangel of Ateneo Blue Eaglets made waves after he was named part of the Mythical Five in the recently concluded Nike All-Asia Camp in China.
A native of Bacolod City, Belangel was one of the Filipino basketball players who got an individual award. Far Eastern University Baby Tamaraws’ Ljhay Gonzales was named Most Outstanding Player and Best Defensive Player.
The Nike All-Asia Camp was a by-invitation basketball camp for high school players in Asia.
Belangel, a mainstay for Batang Pilipinas, was considered the best basketball product from Bacolod since Rain or Shine Elasto Painters’ James Yap.
His name was made known after scoring 99 points in a game in an under-13 league in Iloilo City. He also had an 85-point and 65-point outputs in the tournament while donning the Tay Tung High School jersey.
Belangel first played organized basketball with Eliakim Learning School in the BUS Group 10-Under competition. He also had stints with University of St. La Salle-Bacolod and St. Joseph School in Iloilo City before suiting up for Tay Tung.
Other Filipino cagers in the camp were Blue Eaglets’ Kai Sotto and Dave Ildefonso, and University of the Philippines Maroons’ Juan Gomez de Llano.
Serving as guest of honor in the event was Phoenix Suns guard Devin Booker, who scored 70 points in a game against Boston Celtics during the 2016-2017 NBA season./PN
