ILOILO City – Employees headed for or getting off work during the wee hours should always be vigilant, police stressed.
A call center agent bound for work was stabbed and robbed around 1:50 a.m. on Monday in Zone 3, Barangay San Juan, Molo district.
Cherry Lyn Rentoy of the same village sustained wounds on the face and forehead.
The 22-year-old was taken to The Medical City, said Inspector Marlon Valencia, chief of the Molo police station.
Police identified her attacker as the 21-year-old trisikad driver Charlie Earl Dela Cruz of the same barangay.
Rentoy was walking on a bridge when attacked.
Dela Cruz also grabbed her sling bag, which contained a Sony Xperia smartphone and Bank of the Philippine Islands and Banco De Oro automated teller machine (ATM) cards, Valencia said.
The call center agent did not have any cash with her, he added.
Her boyfriend, who works in the same call center company, would usually fetch Rentoy and accompany her to work during his break period. At the time, however, the boyfriend was not able to, said Valencia.
Dela Cruz escaped when the victim shouted.
A pursuit operation with the help of barangay officials led the police to his house where they arrested him around 5:30 a.m.
Officers recovered the sling bag and the cell phone — the suspect’s mother, 58-year-old Rosemarie, turned them over — but not the ATM cards. They also found a 5-inch knife believed to be owned by the suspect.
Dela Cruz is facing robbery with frustrated homicide charges.
Valencia advised all call center agents, especially those on “graveyard” shift, to always be careful when leaving their houses or workplaces. (With a report from Harvey Cagalitan, intern/PN)
