MANILA – China donated P15 million for the relief and rehabilitation plans for the conflict-stricken city of Marawi in southern Philippines.
More than a month of fighting between government troops and the Maute local terrorist group devastated Marawi, capital of Lanao del Sur province, killing hundreds and forcing tens of thousands to flee their homes.
The donation from the Chinese government will augment the resources of the Health and Social Welfare departments, which cater to the needs of those displaced, Malacañang said.
“The donation is an example of the flourishing partnership between the two countries and their shared commitment toward sustainable peace in the region,” said the Presidential Communications Operations Office.
In May, President Rodrigo Duterte and Chinese President Xi Jinping held a bilateral meeting, which sought to expand the diplomatic ties between their countries, during the “One Belt, One Road” forum in Beijing.
As of June 26, the Social Welfare department has spent at least P85 million worth of assistance to Marawi evacuees. The agency provided food packs, hygiene kits, kitchen utensils, tents, among others.
The Health department, on the other hand, provided P52 million worth of health services, including checkups, immunizations, medicines, mental and psychological services, and food and water.
In a speech during the Eid al-Fitr celebration in Malacañang on Tuesday, Duterte promised a “path of peace” in Mindanao.
The entire major southern region was placed under martial law on May 23 in light of the armed clashes in Marawi.
“To our brothers and sisters who have been affected by the violence and conflict in Mindanao, I assure you that the government is committed to securing just and lasting peace in the island,” Duterte said./PN
