ILOILO – Twenty families from the conflict-torn city of Marawi in Lanao del Sur have evacuated to Western Visayas, according to the Department of Social Welfare and Development (DSWD).
DSWD Region 6 has identified the families, comprising around 90 individuals, in Iloilo and Roxas cities, said Don F. Saso, focal person for Disaster Response Operations, Monitoring and Information Center.
Some of the evacuees were staying with their relatives while others were renting spaces.
The Social Welfare department’s regional office has extended assistance to the families who left their homes amid the clashes between government troops and the Maute terrorist group.
Ten food packs were provided to each family last week. They were also given hygiene kits, used clothes, blankets, cooking pats, and towels, among others, said Saso.
Some of the evacuees have started doing business, like selling compact discs and digital video discs, and jewelry, he said.
DSWD Region 6 coordinates with local government units in verifying information that more Marawi evacuees are headed to Western Visayas.
Everyone is encouraged to report to DSWD or their barangay captain if they know of other Marawi evacuees in their area, Saso said.
“It is important that we know where they are for us to include them in special programs the government might provide in the future,” he said. (PNA)
