ILOILO City – Illegal gambling charges may be filed against a resident of Banate, Iloilo caught collecting bets for “bookies.”
Police arrested and brought Elmer Majestad of Barangay Carmelo, Banate to their station around 11:20 a.m. on Tuesday.

Gambling paraphernalia and P390 bets for the illegal numbers game were seized from the 32-year-old suspect in Barangay Merced.

Majestad was hauled to the Banate police station lockup facility.

The Iloilo Police Provincial Office was struggling to clamp down on illegal gambling, particularly bookies.

Apparently, the entry of the Philippine Charity Sweepstakes Office-sanctioned Small Town Lottery was not much help, according to the provincial police director Senior Superintendent Marlon Tayaba.

Within 15 days beginning July 24, all police chiefs across the province must wipe out illegal gambling in their respective turfs. Otherwise, they will get relieved from their posts, Tayaba said./PN
