KALIBO, Aklan – Sen. Cynthia Villar urged local officials to develop more agriculture-based tourism destinations in the province.
“Agritourism is the next big thing in the tourism sector,” said Villar who was the guest speaker during the inauguration of the new Sangguniang Panlalawigan building on Thursday.
The Senate committee on agriculture head said more than just following the trend, boosting agriculture and tourism will help the county’s economy.
Villar said agritourism will open more opportunities to farmers.
The average income of a farmer is only around P4,500, less than the P6,500 needed to feed a family of five, Villar said.
“I see farm tourism as a way out of poverty for farmers. It will increase their income and give them other livelihood and business opportunities,” she added.
Villar, a businesswoman, also said farmers must be guided to improve their entrepreneurial mindset.
The Farm Tourism Development Act of 2016, authored by Villar, promotes the development of agritourism sites in the country. (PNA)
