Availability of nutritious, ready-to-cook food during emergencies
IN THE event of calamities, either natural or man-made, the basic needs of the affected people would definitely be food, water, shelter, and clothing.
While food rations could be provided by certain sectors, which are usually composed of rice, canned goods or instant noodles, these could not provide the necessary nutrients to keep our bodies healthy.
Like for instance the calamities brought about by the super typhoon in the provinces of Leyte and Samar, the strong earthquake that hit Surigao, and the atrocities which happened in Marawi City, the affected individuals are in dire need of food, nutritious at that, to be able to sustain their existence.
This is where easy and ready-to-cook meals, but highly nutritious food, will be very much needed.
To be able to address this concern, the PURO Corporation, which is a vital arm of Bacolod City-based RU Foundry and Machine Shop Corporation (RUFMSC), was able to come up with the Black Rice-Monggo-Muscovado-Malunggay and Red Rice-Monggo-Muscovado-Malunggay nutritious and ready-to-cook porridge.
The ready-to-cook porridge is a complete meal in itself, and very nutritious too, according to PURO laboratory head William Borca.
Aside from being nutritious, all the ingredients are organically produced in the different areas of Negros Occidental, and were processed hygienically inside the sanitized laboratory of PURO, Borca added.
In just about three to five minutes of cooking time, the nutritious and hot porridge can be eaten, which is highly recommended for children and adults alike.
Borca says that the porridge will have the right consistency when cooked, and soft enough to be swallowed easily by children, but thick enough to take without spilling.
The ready-to-cook porridge is highly nutritious because it is made of either black or red rice, monggo, muscovado sugar, and malunggay leaves, and the finished product is hygienically packed in food grade plastic containers.
The preparation of the porridge during times of emergencies is much easier, compared with cooking plain rice which will take several minutes.
For its standard 300 grams pack, you will only need about 10 cups of water to have at least 8 to 10 servings.
Just imagine the nutrition which the product could provide to a person during incidents of emergencies.
But the porridge is also advisable to be given to children even during normal days to supplement their daily dietary requirements.
When asked as to why they preferred using the two varieties of rice, Borca says that black rice alone contains one of the highest levels of anthocyanin, the antioxidant which can be found in any known food.
It was learned that the anthocyanin content of black rice is said to be higher than any other grain.
Borca explains that a half cup serving of cooked black rice contains approximately: 160 calories; 1.5 grams of fat; 34 grams of carbohydrates; 2 grams of fiber; 5 grams of protein; and about 4 percent DV for iron.
While the red variety gets its rich color from anthocyanin, which is also found in deep purple or reddish fruits and vegetables. (jaypeeyap@ymail.com/PN)
