MANILA – Ozamiz City vice mayor Nova Princess Parojinog-Echavez and brother Reynaldo Jr. were recommended charged with illegal possession of firearms and possession of illegal drugs, their lawyer said.
The Department of Justice submitted the criminal charges for resolution yesterday afternoon, according to Atty. Ferdinand Topacio.
The siblings also refused to sign a waiver of detention under Article 125 of the Revised Penal Code, which provides for the period when a suspect has to be delivered to proper judicial authorities, Topacio said.
The Parojinogs were arrested during raids conducted by the regional Criminal Investigation and Detection Group, Misamis Occidental Police Provincial Office and Ozamiz City police station on Sunday.
The operation turned bloody when shooting between the officers and the Parojinogs’ security personnel ensued, resulting in 14 casualties – including Mayor Reynaldo Parojinog Sr., wife Susan and brother Octavio Jr., a Misamis Occidental provincial board member.
Mayor Parojinog was one of the local government officials whom President Rodrigo Duterte publicly linked to the illegal drug trade.
Aside from several high-powered firearms, police also recovered bundles of money and suspected drug paraphernalia from the Parojinog houses.
‘SURRENDER’
Meanwhile, an Interior department official urged local government officials whom Duterte tagged to the drug trade to turn themselves in.
Suspected narco-politicians who will surrender to the department will be afforded due process, said Assistant Secretary Rico Judge Echiverri.
“Hindi naman ho tayo hindi sumusunod sa batas dito sa DILG (Department of the Interior and Local Government),” Echiverri said. “Sa war on drugs ng gobyerno, iyong mga malaki man o maliit na tao, hindi ho namin sasantuhin. The full force of the law will be applied to them.”
“It’s a matter of safety na rin para sa kanila,” he added. “Ang sini-search warrant natin iyong mga malalaking tao at iyang mga iyan hindi naman iyan susuko ng basta-basta, lalo na kung may mga armas sila.”
Last year, Duterte identified over 150 incumbent and retired government officials suspected to have links to drug trafficking. Most of them have turned themselves in to the Interior department to deny the allegation./PN
