ILOILO – The provincial government and 3rd Infantry Division (3ID) of the Philippine Army are extending financial support to the family of the barangay tanod who got wounded by New People’s Army (NPA) rebels in Leon town and eventually died.
Gov. Arthur Defensor Sr. said the family of 53-year-old Romeo Cabalong of Barangay Lampaya, Leon would be receiving P20,000 from the capitol.
On the other hand, 3ID commander Major General Jon Aying pledged an additional P20,000.
On July 15, 25 days after successfully fending off rebels, Cabalong died at the Western Visayas Medical Center where he had been confined since June 20. He was shot on the left shoulder. The bullet, however, also hit his liver and spinal column
“He performed beyond the call of duty, exemplifying his heroism and patriotism,” said Aying.
Armed men attacked the tanod outpost of Barangay Lampaya on June 20. Cabalong and several companions stood their ground until enforcements from the Philippine Army’s 61st Infantry Battalion – Alpha Company arrived around 10:30 a.m.
According to Barangay Councilman Benito Cantomayor, the armed men also lobbed an M203 grenade at the tanod outpost.
Plaques of recognition were given to the Barangay Lampaya tanods during a recent Provincial Peace and Order Council’s meeting at the provincial capitol.
Another incentive was being planned for the tanods – livelihood assistance. According to Department of the Interior and Local Government Iloilo director Teodora Sumagaysay, the governor and Sangguniang Panlalawigan were free to determine what livelihood incentive to give.
Defensor said the tanods “placed the safety of their community above their own to preserve the peace and freedom of the community against the act of terrorism and violence.”/PN
City hall orders declogging of drainages
ILOILO City – The city government’s declogging team has started cleaning all drainages and outfalls in the metropolis.
Mayor Jed Patrick Mabilog ordered the declogging in preparation for the citywide cleanup activity on Aug. 5 in line with Iloilo City’s 80th Charter Day celebration.
“This will also free the drainage system of solid waste, thus ensuring the smooth flow of water,” he added.
The declogging team started with the drainage on Iznart Street; Barangay Ma. Clara, City Proper; and areas surrounding the Iloilo Central Market. These were followed by drainages within the area of Iloilo Terminal Market.
City Administrator Hernando Galvez said the cleanup drive on Aug. 5 will be participated in city hall employees together with the following:
* barangay officials
* Philippine Coast Guard
* Philippine National Police
* Bureau of Fire Protection – Iloilo City
* Department of Education
* some universities and colleges
* homeowners’ associations
* Department of Environment and Natural Resources, among others
“Through this cleanup activity, we aim to give emphasis to the importance of maintaining the cleanliness of our surroundings, and that this program of Mayor Mabilog in line with the advocacy of President Rodrigo Roa Duterte on environmental protection,” said Galvez. (Iloilo City PIO/PN)
