MANILA – Barangay Ginebra San Miguel Kings broke away from a tight first half to score 110-97 against NLEX Road Warriors in the Oppo PBA Governors’ Cup yesterday at the Calasiao Sports Complex in Pangasinan.
Joe Devance topped the scoring with 23 including two 3-pointers for the defending champion Ginebra, which improved to a 3-1 win-loss record.
Justin Brownlee added 22 while LA Tenorio contributed 16 points as they played without injured guard Solomon Mercado.
Holding on to a slim 50-48 lead at the half, Ginebra started to pull away in the third frame behind Brownlee and Devance for a 76-66 lead. The lead further widened 86-66 on back-to-back triples by Tenorio.
NLEX was able to cut the deficit to 15 on hits by Rabeh Al-Hussaini but Ginebra managed to widen the gap anew to its largest 100-78 on a Mark Caguioa hit.
Reinforcement Aaron Fuller led the way with 20 points for NLEX, which dropped to 4-1.
On Friday night at the Smart-Araneta Coliseum, Star Hotshots stretched its winning run to three following a 104-98 victory over San Miguel Beermen.
After leading by as much as 12 points, Hotshots suddenly saw its lead vanish after a furious run by Beermen, which played without June Mar Fajardo. But clutch baskets from import Malcolm Hill and Ian Sangalang clinched the win for Star.
Hill led the scoring with 20 while Sangalang chipped in 18 for Star, which tied with Meralco Bolts in the first place (3-0). Beermen dropped to 2-1./PN
