MANILA – Ilongga Ariana Dormitorio kept her impressive run in the 2017 Asian Mountain Bike Series, ruling as overall champion in Leg 2 on Sunday in Tambunan, Sabah, Malaysia.
The Iloilo City native easily blazed past her 12 other rivals to complete the 22km race that covered five laps of a 4.4km fast and technical course.
Dormitorio also got a huge break midway with her closest rival Warinthorn Phetraphan of Thailand forced to withdraw due to mechanical trouble.
She finished the race clocking 1:25.49. Siti Aisyah Alias of Malaysia landed on second place with 1:33.18 while Siriluck Warapiang of Thailand placed third with 1:34.14.
“This gold medal just reminds us that kaya ng Pilipino na mag-compete sa ganitong level ng competition,” said Dormitorio, who was poised to become the tournament champion for the second straight year with two legs left.
After the competition, Dormitorio and her father and coach Donjie Pascual Dormitorio will shift their focus to the World Under-23 Championships in Australia next month.
Meanwhile, another Filipino – JR Barba – ruled the 2.4km technical course after beating his 15 other Asian rivals. His brother Wendell, on the other hand, topped the men’s masters A division.
A record number of 300 bikers from 14 countries participated in the UCI-sanctioned tournament, which gives opportunities for riders to earn UCI points for Worlds and Olympic qualifiers./PN
