ILOILO City – Complaints for possession of illegal drugs, firearms and ammunition, and explosive were filed against the 10 suspected members of a swindling syndicate arrested in Banate, Iloilo.
The Banate police station led by Chief Inspector Jojo Tabaloc filed the charges at the Provincial Prosecutor’s Office yesterday.
Charged with violation of the Comprehensive Dangerous Drugs Act of 2002, the Comprehensive Firearms and Ammunition Regulation Act and Republic Act 8294 (unlawful possession of explosive) were the following:

The suspects allegedly tricked the 72-year-old Silveria Bondoc, a resident of Barangay 8, San Jose, Antique, into exchanging several pieces of her jewelry for a bagful of paper cutouts last Thursday.
The San Jose police station has yet to file the swindling charge as of this writing.
Chief Inspector Juvy Cordero, the station chief, said they were still coordinating with Bondoc.
Tabaloc said the charges the Banate police filed stemmed from the recovery of 13 sachets of shabu, drug paraphernalia, two .38 revolvers with ammunition, and an improvised explosive device from the group.
The suspects will be hauled to the Banate police station custodial facility pending a court order on where they will be detained, Tabaloc said.
Further recovered from the suspects were P24,000 cash, pieces of jewelry, 11 mobile phones, 41 pieces of United States dollar bills in different denominations, and a digital weighing scale.
The suspects were cornered at the CRCI Beach Resort in Barangay Alacaygan, Banate at around 10 p.m. on Aug. 17.
After Bondoc reported her ordeal, the San Jose police station wired to all police stations a message on the whereabouts of the suspects on board two vehicles – a black Honda Starex with plate number AAF-7068 registered in Region 10 and a maroon Mitsubishi Montero without a plate number.
Police said the suspects befriended Bondoc at the San Jose public plaza and passed themselves off as members of Jehovah’s Witnesses. One of them identified himself as “Engineer Mike Cabrera.”
They initially targeted Bondoc’s bankbook and automated teller machine card “galing wala man natigayon kay offline,” Cordero said. They then cajoled the victim into giving up her jewelry for a supposedly large sum of money kept in a bag.
“She (Bondoc) was told to open the bag only when she reached her house. When she did, what she saw was not money but paper cutouts,” said Cordero./PN
