ILOILO – A member of the Philippine Marines from Barangay Canabuan, Tigbauan, Iloilo died in a landmine explosion in Marawi City.
The other day, the body of Private First Class Kevin Cangrejo was transported back to Tigbauan.
According to Andres Cubing, an uncle, Cangrejo was an operator of an armored vehicle.
The vehicle hit a landmine that consequently exploded, said Cubing.
Cangrejo sustained a fatal head injury.
Now on its third month, the fighting in Marawi has so far killed 129 government troops and 45 civilians.
But according to Armed Forces of the Philippines (AFP) public affairs office chief, Colonel Edgard Arevalo, government troops have also neutralized 583 Maute group terrorists.
Some 640 firearms were recovered, too, from the Maute Group while 1,728 civilians were rescued, added Arevalo.
Earlier, the AFP said three of the ranking terrorist leaders who plotted the attack against Marawi City were still in the locality.
Latest monitoring indicated that Abu Sayyaf leader Isnilon Hapilon, Abdullah Maute and brother Omar, the suspected leaders of the Maute Group of terrorists, were still inside the city.
