MANILA – Stallion-Laguna Football Club continued its uprising in the 2017 Philippines Football League after scoring a 2-1 upset over Global-Cebu Football Club the other night at the Binan Football Stadium in Biñan, Laguna.
Ilonggo Jan Jesus Melliza and Terrence Linatoc scored a goal each to lead the way for Stallion-Laguna.
Now with 20 points on five wins, eight losses and five draws, Stallion-Laguna moved up to sixth place in the standings.
It got most of the touches early in the match but failed to convert one due to the defense of Global-Cebu’s Jerry Barbaso.
Global-Cebu also had its chances but most of their attempts were also deflected by Ilonggo Ruben Doctora.
After a scoreless first half, Stallion-Laguna finally break the ice early in the second half with Linatoc scoring from close range. The lead was later doubled courtesy of a wide open slot by La Paz, Iloilo-native Melliza.
Global-Cebu tried to mount a fightback following a conversion by Rufino Sanchez in the 90th minute. The Cebuanos had a chance to salvage a draw but Yu Hoshide misfired his free kick.
With the defeat, Akbar Nabas-mentored Global-Cebu remained in a deadlock for the No. 2 spot with Kaya Football Club-Makati with 29 points, on eight victories, five draws and four defeats.
Meanwhile, Allen Angeles scored the game-tying goal early in the first half as JP Voltes Football Club-Marikina salvaged a 1-1 draw with Meralco Manila Sparks Football Club at the Rizal Memorial Football Stadium.
Meralco Manila Sparks gained the early lead of the match after a header by Joaquin Canas in the 13th minute. It was quickly tied by the visiting JP Voltes before the half with Angeles draining one from the left side.
Meralco Manila Sparks are still on top of the standings with 40 points, on 12 victories, two defeats and four deadlocks, while JP Voltes is at fifth place with 24 points on seven wins, six losses and three draws./PN
