MANILA – Lyceum Pirates completed a sweep of the first round of the NCAA Season 93 men’s seniors basketball following a 97-74 rout of undermanned Mapua Cardinals at the San Juan Arena.
Despite facing an undermanned Cardinals on Friday, the Pirates never really left anything to chance. It scored a wire-to-wire domination to claim their ninth straight victory and a first round sweep.
Jaymart Perez led the way with 18 points, with 16 coming in the first half.
Wilson Baltazar and Negrense Spencer Pretta combined for 21 markers for the Pirates, which tallied its largest lead at 78-46 late in the third quarter.
“There is nothing to celebrate because there are still nine games to go. We just need to keep honoring the game and find ways to keep on improving,” said Pirates head coach Michael Robinson.
Meanwhile, San Beda Red Lions leaned on its huge second quarter run to score a 95-70 win over Arellano University Chiefs in a rematch of the Season 92 best-of-three finals.
Robert Bolick led the way with 23 points, including five three-point conversions, while Jayvee Mocon chipped in with double-double 19 points and 14 rebounds.
With the win, the Red Lions remained at second place in the standings with its 8-1 win-loss record.
Holding to a slim 28-27 lead early in the second quarter, Red Lions went on a 20-3 run anchored on Bolick, Mocon and Ilonggo Clint Doliguez to build a 48-30 advantage at the half before widening it further to its largest at 25 points later in the game.
“We’re happy that we got this win to finish this round with just one loss,” said Red Lions head coach Boyet Fernandez. “I really appreciate the way my players have been preparing. It has been really physical but it helped us a lot.”/PN
