ILOILO City – A man from Lapuz claiming to be an “asset” of the Philippine Drug Enforcement Agency (PDEA) Region 6 and his mother were arrested in a police antidrug operation in the district.
Noel Andresio, 35, and mother Lilia, 60 – both residents of Barangay Lapuz Norte, Lapuz – were detained at the La Paz police station.
La Paz police operatives seized from them four sachets of suspected shabu, a blue sling bag, an eyeglass case, a pair of scissors, a cellphone and a charger, and drug paraphernalia.
Andresio was an asset, or undercover operative, of the PDEA Region 6 while Lilia was a job hire at city hall, the suspects themselves told Panay News after their arrest on Friday, Sept. 1.
They denied peddling prohibited drugs and owning the items recovered from them.
Andresio claimed he was selling lotions and perfumes. He admitted using illegal drugs before but said he stopped when Rodrigo Duterte was elected president.
Lilia claimed she knew about her son’s drug problem – Andresio was a drug surrenderee, she said – but did not know that he was selling.
According to Andresio, he was standing in front of their house when a police officer approached and accosted him.
Lilia tried to obstruct the arrest and grabbed the blue sling bag where some of the recoveries were placed, said Senior Inspector Rey Sumagaysay, La Paz police chief.
Sumagaysay confirmed that Andresio was a drug surrenderee. They had been monitoring him since his name cropped up in their watch list of drug personalities three months ago, the police official said.
PDEA Region 6 director Wardley Getalla denied that Andresio was an active asset but said the latter may have been employed under the previous regional director.
Getalla stressed that active assets involved in wrongdoing, especially illegal drugs, will be held to account.
Andresio and Lilia were facing charges for violation of Republic Act 9165, or the Comprehensive Dangerous Drugs Act of 2002, specifically sections 11 (possession of dangerous drugs) and 12 (possession of drug paraphernalia). Lilia was facing an additional obstruction of justice charge./PN
