ILOILO City – The City Social Welfare and Development Office distributed relief packs to fire victims in barangays Bakhaw and Bolilao in Mandurriao district.
Affected families were temporarily staying in Bolilao Elementary School, and the day care center, youth center, health center, and covered gym in Bakhaw.
A sack of rice, which could last 15 days, was given to each family, along with water and canned goods, among other food items, said Evelyn Mandal, a day care worker in Mandurriao.
Eighty houses were razed by the midday blaze that struck on Thursday last week.
The city government was also set to release cash aid: P5,000 for those with totally damaged houses and P3,000 for those with partially damaged houses.
“We are still gathering data with regard to the families and the damage their houses incurred,” Mandal said.
Aside from food, the fire victims were asking for donated household items, including cooking and kitchen utensils.
Meanwhile, City Administrator Hernando Galvez said they will check if the fire victims may be accommodated at relocation sites.
The blaze started around 11:30 a.m. at the house of Jona Kasigna-signa in Barangay Bolilao, according to the Bureau of Fire Protection (BFP).
Most of the houses – many operating as boardinghouses – were made of light materials so the fire spread fast.
Senior Fire Officer 1 Rollin Hormina said around 10 people got minor injuries, three of whom were BFP firefighters and three were residents helping quell the blaze.
The cost of damage was pegged at P10 million./PN
