ILOILO City – Mayor Jed Patrick Mabilog believes the death of Richard “Buang” Prevendido will end illegal drug problems in this city.
Mabilog commended the police for the “successful neutralization” of the drug lord.
“Prevendido’s death is an exclamation point that will put an end to the era of illegal drugs in Iloilo City,” the mayor said in a statement released yesterday.
“Kabay pa nga masaradhan na ang kabanata nga ini kag indi na gid naton pagtugutan nga masulit pa,” said Mabilog.
The “legitimate police operation,” said the mayor, proved that local law enforcers were committed to order and justice in Western Visayas, particularly Iloilo City.
“We hope that, with Prevendido gone, the illegal drug problem will be entirely minimized, if not eliminated,” he said.
“But this will not mean we will be complacent,” said Mabilog. “The Iloilo City government, together with the PNP (Philippine National Police) and PDEA (Philippine Drug Enforcement Agency) will continue the war on illegal drugs and will not stop until the battle is won.”
Mabilog said he was facilitating the release of the P500,000 bounty the city government promised.
“We thank the Ilonggos who helped our police ultimately track him (Prevendido) down as he constantly moved from place to place to elude our authorities,” he said.
Director General Ronald Dela Rosa, PNP chief, also lauded the police for the operation, where Prevendido and son Jason were shot and killed after allegedly putting up a fight with the arresting officers.
“Matagal nang pinaghahanap iyang si Richard Prevendido. Hindi talaga siya nag-surrender,” Dela Rosa said in a radio interview yesterday. “Ang pagkapatay sa kanya ay bunga ng pagsisikap ng Iloilo provincial police.”
Operatives from the Iloilo Police Provincial Office, Iloilo City Police Office and the Regional Intelligence Unit staged the operation on Friday night in Landheights Subdivision, Barangay Balabago, Jaro district.
“Kampante at desidido iyang si Prevendido na manlaban sa pulisya kaya hindi talaga iyan na-surrender sa mga pulis,” Dela Rosa said, adding that the drug lord’s death can be considered a huge blow to the drug trade in the city.
Malacañang, meanwhile, said the killing of Prevendido “shows the enormous risk our police officers face each time warrants are implemented against high-value targets.”
Police said they were out to serve Prevendido a warrant of arrest for violation of the Comprehensive Dangerous Drugs Act of 2002 but the drug lord fired at them, prompting them to shoot him to death.
