ILOILO City – To raise funds to financially support administratively charged officers, the Police Regional Office 6 (PRO-6) will hold a “run for a cause.”
In this city, “Dalagan Suporta sa Kapulisan” will start at a mall in Mandurriao district from 5 a.m. to 8 a.m. on Sept. 23.
A similar activity will be held simultaneously in other provinces in Western Visayas, said Superintendent Gilbert Gorero, PRO-6 spokesperson.
There will be two races: 5 kilometers and 3 kilometers.
Regular participants will be charged P150 in the 5km race and P100 for the 3km contest.
Students, meanwhile, will have to pay P100 for 5km and P75 for 3km.
Gorero said the PRO-6 Regional Advisory Council initiated the fundraising project.
“This initiative will help boost the morale of police officers facing administrative cases stemming from the performance of their duty,” Gorero said.
He said the project was conceptualized after Chief Inspector Charlie Sustento, police chief of Ajuy, Iloilo and head of the Iloilo Police Provincial Office’s (IPPO) Provincial Drug Enforcement Unit, and three other policemen were ordered dismissed from the service.
The Ombudsman found the officers guilty of grave misconduct, conduct unbecoming of police officers, gross incompetence, abuse of authority, and violation of the Code of Conduct and Ethical Standards for Public Officials and Employees.
Sustento vowed to challenge the dismissal order.
Also ordered dismissed were Police Officer 3 Ramon Baylon Jr., Police Officer 2 Joebert Detorio and Police Officer 1 John Dimzon.
Earlier the IPPO launched the “Isang Libo para kay Sustento” fundraising campaign to financially sustain Sustento and his fellow beleaguered officers as they seek effective legal counsel.
Under this drive, each IPPO officer will donate P1,000, said IPPO director Senior Superintendent Marlon Tayaba.
“We have to help our policemen who were working hard to maintain peace and order in our province,” Tayaba stressed.
The PRO-6 will help provide its troubled officers competent legal counsel “as a matter of procedure,” Chief Superintendent Cesar Hawthorne Binag, regional police director, earlier said./PN
