JANIUAY, Iloilo – More than 2,000 volunteers planted around 6,000 seedlings of indigenous trees such as kamagong, narra and jackfruit in barangays Bongol and Balanac yesterday.
The tree-planting activity was in celebration of the 18th Pyesta sa Kakahuyan.
Department heads and employees of the Iloilo provincial government, employees of other national government agencies, students, and civic organization members planted the seedlings along the bank of Suage River stretching 2 kilometers.
Mayor Jose de Paula was thankful that his municipality was chosen as venue of this year’s Pyesta sa Kakahuyan.
De Paula said they have been pushing for the protection of the Suage River – the town’s primary source of potable water – from excessive quarrying.
The mayor promised that the local government will hold its own tree-planting activities.
“Your participation is very important because it shows your concern for the future generation,” Gov. Arthur Defensor Sr. told the participants yesterday.
He urged more tree-planting activities, which he said could help mitigate the effects of global warming and climate change.
Another capitol program promoting reforestation and coastal resource management is the Action for Regreening and Transformation for Climate Change Adaptation.
Launched in 2010, the program led to the planting of more than 2 million tree seedlings in the different parts of the province. (Erly Garcia, Capitol News/PN)
