MANILA – “Fake victory” was how Sen. Risa Hontiveros called the adoption of the Philippines’ human rights report card by the United Nations Human Rights Council.
Only human rights violators would consider it a success, said the senator.
The adoption was made during the 36th session of the UN Human Rights Council last week.
Of the recommendations it received to improve its human rights situation, the Philippines fully accepted only 103 and dismissed 154 others.
Malacañang said it is committed to accepting the 103 recommendations.
“Human rights violators lang ang matutuwa at magbubunyi sa nangyari,” Hontiveros said. “Talo ang sambayanan.”
“Paano naging tagumpaay ang pagtanggi sa 44 na rekomendasyon upang tugunan ang kaso ng mga extrajudicial killings sa bansa, 23 na rekomendasyon laban sa panunumbalik ng death penalty at pagbaba ng minimum age of criminal liability, at 13 na rekomendasyon para proteksyunan ang buhay at seguridad ng mga mamamahayag at human rights defenders?” she said.
The adoption “was done and in line with our independent foreign policy,” Presidential Spokesperson Ernesto Abella said in a statement on Monday.
It went through “a careful review and inclusive consultation, with inputs from various stakeholders, especially from representatives of the State’s executive, legislative and judicial departments,” said Abella.
The Duterte administration welcomed the final adoption, he said.
“What really matters is that the (UN) Human Rights Council has adopted the Philippine report, recognizing the country’s human rights record and commitments under the leadership of President Rodrigo Roa Duterte,” said Abella./PN
