ILOILO City – Two criminology students were suspected of selling prohibited drugs.
Police arrested Edu Pace Matulac, 19, and Jenny Jano, 27, in an antidrug operation on Luna Street, La Paz district.
Matulac, a resident of Barangay Lo-ong, Concepcion, Iloilo, was a third-year student of the University of Iloilo – PHINMA, while Jano of Barangay East Baluarte, Molo district was a senior student at St. Therese-MTC Colleges La Paz campus, police said.
The students sold a sachet of suspected shabu to an undercover officer for P1,200. Resisting arrest, Matulac punched an arresting officer and ran toward St. Clement’s Church but was later subdued, said the police.
Police said 13 more sachets of suspected shabu were seized from them, along with two cellphones, P500 cash, and a motorcycle.
Operatives from the La Paz police station and Drug Enforcement Units (DEU) of the Iloilo City Police Office (ICPO) and the Police Regional Office 6 staged the operation at around 2:30 p.m. on Wednesday.
Jano first told Panay News he has never used or sold illegal drugs but later claimed that he used to snort but stopped in 2011 and had undergone rehabilitation.
He said he just met with Matulac to invite him to a birthday party but had no idea that the latter was already arrested.
A police report described Jano as a drug trade “conspirator.”
Matulac and Jano were detained at La Paz police station. They were facing charges for violation of the Comprehensive Dangerous Drugs Act of 2002.
Superintendent Rugen Morales, head of the ICPO DEU, said the student suspects get their supply from Franz Gemangga, 22, of Barangay Balabago, Jaro who was also arrested in an antidrug operation on the same day in Jaro.
Five sachets of suspected shabu were seized from Gemangga, who was hauled to the Jaro police station lockup cell./PN
