MANILA – Chooks-To-Go Gilas Pilipinas made a quick work of Shabab Al-Ahli of Dubai, 92-57, in the classification round of the FIBA Asia Champions Cup 2017 last night at the Chenzhou Sports Center in Chenzhou, China.
Ilonggo Kiefer Ravena led the way with 20 points, including two three-point baskets, while Almond Vosotros, Bacolodnon LA Revilla and Jeric Teng added 14, 12 and 11 points, respectively, for the Philippine team.
With the victory, the Vincent “Chot” Reyes-mentored squad will have a chance to salvage at least a fifth place finish in the tournament if it beats Mono Vampire of Thailand at 12:15 p.m. today.
The Philippine team was relegated to the classification round following an 86-70 defeat in the hands of the Kashgar team of China in the knockout quarterfinals round on Thursday night.
The Philippines had a strong start in the game courtesy of Ravena, Teng and Cruz for a 16-8 lead. The Arabs managed to rally its way back to trim the deficit to 19-15 early in the second quarter.
The Philippines, however, was quick to answer back with Ravena and Carl Bryan Cruz hitting their outside shots to widen the lead to 42-26 at the half following an inside basket by Isaiah Austin.
The Philippine team pulled away for good in the second half with conversions from Ravena and Revilla to build its largest lead of the match at 84-53 on a triple by Al Francis Tamsi.
Qais Alshabebi finished with double-double 28 points and 13 rebounds for the Shabab Al-Ahli team, which was reduced to seven players heading into the match due to injuries.
