MANILA – Jeramer Cabanag came up with one of his best scoring performances as San Beda Red Lions scored an 83-72 win over Arellano University Chiefs in the NCAA Season 93 men’s seniors basketball at the San Juan Arena.
Cabanag, a native of Bacolod City, Negros Occidental, tallied career-best 14 points for the defending champions Red Lions, which remained at second place in the standings with 13-1 win-loss slate.
On Thursday night, Jayvee Mocon also had 14 points to go along with seven rebounds and five assists, while Robert Bolick and Donald Tankoua contributed 13 and 11 points, respectively, for the Red Lions.
Holding to a slim 61-55 lead entering the final quarter, the Red Lions started strong in the final quarter behind Cabanag and Amiel Cris Soberano to widen the lead to its largest 78-65.
Aside from making their outside shots to fall, the Red Lions also tightened its defense in the final quarter as it held on the offense of Chiefs stars Kent Salado and Michael Canete.
“As what I’ve said to my players, we only have to take good care of ourselves,” said Red Lions head coach Teodorico Fernandez III. “We held Salado to just five points in the second half after he scored 12 in the first, that was the biggest reason.”
In the other match, Mapua Institute of Technology Cardinals outgunned College of St. Benilde Blazers in the final quarter to score a 79-69 ending a despairing 11-game losing skein.
Laurenz Victoria and Denniel Aguirre sizzled with 19 and 15 points, respectively, including a combined 15 in the fourth quarter when the Cardinals unloaded a telling run late. It was Cardinals’ second win in 13 outings./PN
