MANILA – De La Salle University Green Archers vented its ire on University of Santo Tomas Growling Tigers for a 115-86 rout in the UAAP Season 80 men’s basketball.
The victory by the defending champion was a fitting comeback after its 98-87 shock defeat at the hands of University of the Philippines Maroons just a week ago.
Cameroonian Benoit Mbala led the way with 29 points while Andrei Caracut, Leonard Santillan and Prince Rivero added 14, 13 and 11, respectively, for La Salle (4-1) on Saturday at the Smart-Araneta Coliseum.
Oliver de Guzman top-scored with 18 points while Steve Akomo and Jordan Sta. Ana added 15 and 14, respectively, for Tigers, which remained winless (0-6).
DLSU waxed hot early with outside hits from Santillan and Ramil Tero for a 17-5 lead. Tigers rallied to within 13-19 but Green Archers quickly pulled away with hits from Gabrielle Capacio and Jollo Go for 30-19.
Green Archers continued to pound on Tigers’ miscues in the second frame with hits from Mbala and Kib Montalbo 50-26. After a series of points from Tigers, Green Archers answered with hits from Go, widening the lead 57-36 at the half.
In the third quarter Tigers trimmed the deficit 63-78 but Green Archers came up with conversions from Mbala, Rivero and Santillan anew and built its largest lead 115-84 on a Ricci Rivero hit.
“We played unselfish basketball the whole game,” said Green Archers assistant coach Miggy Solitaria. “Sobrang aggressive namin to push our pace.”/PN
