MANILA – National University Lady Bulldogs defeated Ateneo de Manila University Lady Eagles 25-21, 13-25, 25-19, 25-22 in the Premier Volleyball League Collegiate Conference to post a clean 5-0 record.
Jorelle Singh led with 17 while Jaja Santiago and Risa Sato added 12 and 11 points, respectively, for Lady Bulldogs on Saturday night at the San Juan Arena.
The victory assured NU of a seat in the best-of-three semifinals where it will face the winner in the Adamson University Lady Falcon-Arellano University Lady Chiefs game today.
The opening set was a tight start for both teams. Ateneo got on top 16-13 until Lady Bulldogs rallied behind Santiago, Singh and Sato to snatch the lead by the set’s end.
After dropping the second set, Lady Bulldogs engaged in a tight battle in the third.
It held a slim 16-14 lead before NU started pulling away behind Santiago and Singh to build an insurmountable 24-18 edge.
NU started strong 11-4 in the fourth set but Lady Eagles suddenly erased the deficit with a huge run and took a 20-18 lead.
Lady Bulldogs regained control with back-to-back scoring from Santiago, Aiko Urdas and Sato until it sealed the win.
“There was a tug-of-war [on whether] they go back to their old way or stick with the system,” said NU head coach Babes Castillo. “In the end, they trusted the system and stuck with it.”
Jhoanna Maraguinot top-scored with 14 while Kat Tolentino and Bea De Leon added 12 and 10 points, respectively, for Ateneo, whose hope in having a shot at the semifinals is Far Eastern University Lady Tamaraws losing today./PN
