MANILA – Three members of the Taekwondo Association of Passi City (TAPC) bagged medals in the SMART/MVP Sports Foundation National Inter-School Taekwondo Championships on Saturday at the Rizal Memorial Stadium.
Allamelech Jannu Palmares of Assumption Passi finished with a silver out of 60 competitors in the Category 2 Boys after a one-point loss in the championship game.
“Palmares was very impressive,” said TAPC president Janice Pagayon-Palmares. “He did a great job in the finals even if he was already tired after winning his previous four matches with just a 10-minute interval.”
Leigh Yvaine Cia, also of Assumption Passi, took home bronze in the Novice Elementary Group 1 while Frorenz Padernilla of Passi I Central School also had a bronze.
“We are happy with our stint. We sent only three contestants and all of them won medals,” said Pagayon-Palmares. “It is a great achievement for the TAPC in our first attempt here.”
Around 1,500 athletes from schools and organizations affiliated with the Philippine Taekwondo Association participated in the event that featured kyorugi and poomsae competitions.
Kyorugi (sparring) participants were categorized into Novice and Advance groups in seniors, juniors, cadet, and grade school divisions, while the poomsae competition was among individual, pair and team events.
Other participating schools included, among others, Ateneo de Manila, University of Santo Tomas, St. Paul (Pasig), Diliman Preparatory School, Mary Hill School, Emilio Aguinaldo College, Montessori Integrated School, De La Salle University, University of the East;
National University, Philippine Science High School, School of Holy Spirit, University of the Philippines Diliman, De La Salle University Araneta, and Pamantasan ng Lungsod ng Valenzuela./PN
