MANILA – Jared Dillinger carried the load in the endgame for Meralco Bolts to eke out a 72-66 victory over Star Hotshots in Game 1 of the PBA Governors’ Cup best-of-five semifinals last night at the Alonte Sports Arena in Biñan, Laguna.

Trailing 57-66 with less than five minutes in the game, Dillinger drained two straight triples to tie the count at 66-all. He later pushed Bolts 68-66 on a layup before hits from Allen Durham and Garvo Lanete sealed their win.

Dillinger finished with 15 points – 8 came in the fourth quarter – while Durham led the way with double-double 23 points and 15 rebounds and Baser Amer added 10 markers.

Bolts actually had a poor start, down 7-21 at the end of the first quarter, but turned things around in the second frame behind Amer, Durham and Chris Newsome to come to within 32-36 at the half.

Meralco continued its run in the third, clearing a 34-41 deficit to take a 47-45 lead on conversions from Amer and Clifford Hodge. But Hotshots countered with an 8-0 run, six of which came from Jio Jalalon, to regain the lead 53-47.

Star widened the lead to as much as 12 points early in the fourth with a basket from Peter June Simon. Bolts slowly inched its way back behind Durham to trim the deficit 53-59.

Hotshots answered with a trey from Mark Andy Barroca for a 66-57 edge before Bolts went on a 15-0 finishing run behind Dillinger and Ranidel de Ocampo to steal the win.

Jalalon finished with 15 points, including a 9-of-9 shooting from the free throw line, while Barroca and Paul Lee added 11 markers for Star, whose import Kristofer Acox was held to mere 7 points and 16 rebounds./PN
