ILOILO City – The Regional Tripartite Wages and Productivity Board (RTWPB) in Western Visayas is conducting a series of public hearings this month on the proposed increase in the wages of domestic workers or house helps.
According to Atty. Johnson Cañete, regional director of the Department of Labor and Employment (DOLE), the hearings will be held in the cities of Bacolod and Iloilo.
Cañete, also the chairman of RTWPB, said the Iloilo City hearing will be on Oct. 17 from 9 a.m. to 11 a.m. at the Audio Visual Room of DTI Building on corner JM Basa – Gen. Peralta streets, City Proper.
In Bacolod City, the hearing will be on Oct. 23 from 1:30 p.m. to 4 p.m. at the Sugar Workers Development Center on Cottage Road.
“This is a motu propio hearing. Walang petition at wala ring nagrereklamo. Magsasagawa po kami ng public hearings kung kailangan na ba naming i-increase ang sahod ng ating mga domestic helpers,” said Cañete.
The wage board recently conducted a survey, first among the employees of member agencies of DOLE Region 6 who have kasambahay and asked them how much wages they gave to their house helps, among others.
“We will consolidate the results of the survey and hearings when the board deliberates on the increase and by how much,” said Cañete.
At present, the prevailing monthly minimum wage for domestic workers in the region, under Wage Order No. RBVI-DW, are P2,500 for chartered cities and first-class municipalities and P2,000 for other municipalities.
These rates took effect on Feb. 16, 2016.
The most recent wage increase for domestic workers in Region 6, in the amount of P500 per month, was granted in 2015 yet and became effective only last year./PN
