MANILA – Ilonggo Arnel Mandal failed to defend his gold medal in the 14th World Wushu Championships at the Gymnastic Palace in Kazan, Russia on Tuesday night (Wednesday in Manila).
The native of Iloilo City settled for a silver finish in the men’s 52kg sanda event, losing to Vietnamese Min-Duc Vu in the gold medal match.
“I am sorry that I wasn’t able to defend my gold medal. But I am grateful for the show of support of the Filipinos,” said the Ilonggo, who won gold in 2015 by defeating Uchit Sharma of India.
Prior to the finals match, Mandal easily defeated his three opponents – Sharma in the round of 16, Aydin Yikilmaz of Turkey in the quarterfinals and Sargis Sargsyan of Armenia in the semifinals.
Meanwhile, Hergie Bacyadan also settled for silver in the women’s 70kg sanda, losing to Iranian Maryam Hashemi in the finals.
Another Ilonggo, Francisco Solis, and Baguio City native Divine Wally ended up with bronze medals after dropping their semifinals matches in the men’s 56kg sanda and women’s 48kg sanda, respectively.
Three other Filipino wushu bets – Jean Claude Saclag, Clemente Tabugara and playing coach Jessie Aligaga – failed to land medal finishes after suffering early defeats./PN
