MANILA – A P2-billion additional budget for 2018 will make the government’s school-based feeding program more effective, according to Sen. Grace Poe.
Under the program, malnourished children from kindergarten to Grade 6 in public schools are provided with healthy, hot meals for 120 days.
Poe claimed the “huge backlog” in food preparation and equipment in public schools hampers the program.
The senator said the additional budget may be used to put up new or upgrade existing school kitchens and provide them with adequate storage facilities.
The Department of Education (DepEd) allocated P5.3 billion for the feeding program in the proposed 2018 General Appropriations Act.
“Kailangan natin ng sapat at wastong pasilidad para makapaghanda ng masustansyang pagkain para sa milyong mga bata sa ilalim ng programa,” she said.
This year the DepEd allotted P3.9 billion to feed 1.8 million students.
“Ang programang ito ay pantawid-gutom para sa mga mag-aaral na hindi nakakakain nang sapat sa kanilang tahanan,” said Poe.
“Sa pamamagitan ng feeding program, lalagyan natin ng laman hindi lang ang kanilang isipan kundi pati ang sikmurang kumakalam pagpasok sa paaralan,” she said./PN
