MANILA – Clutch hits from Justin Brownlee and LA Tenorio pushed Barangay Ginebra San Miguel Kings to its 86-76 victory against Meralco Bolts in Game 2 of the PBA Governors’ Cup best-of-seven finals last night at the Smart-Araneta Coliseum.
Trailing 67-73 with under five minutes left in the game, Brownlee unloaded 6 straight points to level the count at 75-all. Tenorio then completed a 3-point play for Kings to surge 79-75.
Bolts had a chance to come close but Ranidel de Ocampo converted one of four free throws before Tenorio widened Kings’ lead to 82-76 with a triple. Further free throws from Tenorio and Brownlee sealed their win.
Brownlee finished with 19 points, 12 rebounds and seven assists while Tenorio added 14 markers – 11 coming in the final quarter – for Kings, which cruised to a 2-0 lead in the championship series.
Both teams exchanged runs in the first half. Bolts was once up by as much as 27-18 on early hits by Allen Durham, Chris Newsome and Clifford Hodge before Kings took a 40-37 lead on inside hits by Aguilar.
Bolts had a strong start in the third for a 62-57 lead heading into the fourth. But Kings managed to tie the count at 62-all on a triple by Tenorio before Bolts pulled away for the last time 73-67 on inside hits by Durham.
Prior to the game, Kings’ Gregory Slaughter was adjudged the Best Player of the Conference while Bolts’ Durham was named the Bobby Ray Parks Sr. Best Import.
Slaughter captured the citation to beat San Miguel Beermen’s June Mar Fajardo, TNT KaTropa’s Jayson Castro, Bolts’ Chris Newsome, and Beermen’s Arwind Santos.
Durham, meanwhile, again bagged the title, getting ahead of the likes of Brownlee, Glen Rice Jr. of TNT KaTropa and Terrence Watson of Beermen./PN
