ILOILO City – The government has set aside total of P10.1 billion in fresh funding to modernize the infrastructures of 40 airports in 2018.
Three airports in Western Visayas are included in the funding.
House Deputy Minority Leader Rep. Luis Jose Angel Campos Jr. identified the three Region 6 airports as the following:
- Kalibo International Airport – P920.00 million

Roxas Airport – P169.00 million

Antique Airport – P 10.00 million
Clark International Airport got the biggest slice of P2.74 billion.
Kalibo International Airport is one of two airports serving the world-famous Boracay Island, the other being Godofredo P. Ramos Airport, also known as Caticlan Airport in the town of Malay.
Kalibo International Airport services international destinations such as Taipei, Seoul-Incheon, Busan, Shanghai, Chengdu, Hong Kong, Singapore, and Kuala Lumpur.
It offers more international destinations than domestic destinations.
Roxas Airport, on the other hand, serves the general area of Roxas City, the capital of Capiz. It is classified as a Class 1 principal airport by the Civil Aviation Authority of the Philippines.
Antique Airport is also known as the Evelio Javier Airport or San Jose Airport, the only airport in the province of Antique located in the provincial capital San Jose de Buenavista. It is classified as a Class 2 principal (minor domestic) airport.
Antique’s Gov. Rhodora Cadiao, a former flight attendant, had long been pushing for the reopening of the Antique Airport, saying it could further boost the province’s economy and tourism.
Early this year, she ruled out the commercial reopening of the airport for the province’s Palarong Pambansa hosting (from April 23 to 29), citing time constraints.
“Commercial flights might come in within the year or next year,” she had said.
But the airport was used for the arrival of President Rodrigo Duterte during the Palaro opening.
Antique Airport was closed a few years ago after the airline Asian Spirit ceased its operations due to lack of passengers./PN
