MANILA – Stallion Laguna took advantage of a shorthanded Ceres Negros to pull off a 2-0 upset in the Philippines Football League at the Biñan Football Stadium in Laguna.
Gabriele Mascazzini and Ilonggo Ruben Doctora fired a goal each to lead the way for Stallion, which bounced back on Wednesday night from a 0-1 defeat to Ceres last Saturday.
Despite the defeat, Ceres remains on third place with 42 points – 13 wins, three draws and four defeats – while Stallion is on fifth place with 31 points.
Both team struggled in their shots early before Ceres had chances to score in the 36th minute. But Stephan Schrock misfired on an Iain Ramsay cross and Bacolodnon Arnie Pasinabo’s shot was deflected by Benito Rosalia.
Stallion turned its aggression late in the opening half with attempts from Nathaniel Alquiros and Fitch Arboleda before finally gaining a 1-0 edge with Mascazzini all alone for the strike.
In the second half Stallion took advantage of Ceres’ miscues to widen the lead 2-0 with Doctora slotting the ball past the defense of goalkeeper Ronald Muller.
Ceres had close chances to enter the scoring column late in the match but Joshua Grommen miscalculated a header while Ramsay’s shot was easily saved by Rosalia.
“They (Stallion) played better. They wanted it much more than us,” said Ceres head coach Risto Vidakovic.
“You know, it’s not easy to play because motivation is a very important factor in football. They didn’t play [the way] we expected them to,” Vidakovic said.
Ceres, which still has three home games in its schedule, faced Stallion without the suspended Bienvenido Marañon, Manuel Herrera, Fernando Rodriguez, and Jose Porteria./PN
