MANILA – De La Salle University Lady Archers completed its upset on University of the Philippines Lady Maroons with a 3-2 win in Game 3 of the UAAP Season 80 women’s badminton finals at the Rizal Memorial Badminton Hall.
Nicole Albo clinched the championship for Lady Archers after scoring a 21-16, 21-10 win over Lady Maroons’ Mary Ann Marañon in the third and deciding singles of the do-or-die Game 3.
The championship Sunday last week allowed Lady Archers to become the second winningest team in UAAP women’s badminton with five titles. It was the school’s first tiara in the sport after eight years.
Lady Maroons gained the early advantage in the match with Poca Alcala scoring a 22-20, 21-18 straight set win over Lady Archers’ Arianne Rivera in the women’s first singles.
Lady Archers, however, quickly leveled the match at 1-1 with Iyah Sevilla scoring a come-from-behind 20-22, 21-12, 21-18 victory over Marina Caculitan of Lady Maroons in the second singles.
The Lady Archers went on to take the lead at 2-1 as Isay Leonardo and Albo defeated Lady Maroons’ Sina Alcala and Jessie Francisco, 21-23, 21-17, 21-16, in the first doubles match.
The Lady Maroons was able to force a deciding fifth set with Lea Inlayo and Marañon defeating Lady Archers’ Sevilla and Lindsay Tercias, 21-16, 21-10, in the second doubles.
The championship defeat was hurtful for the dethroned three-time champions Lady Maroons after going undefeated in the elimination round before bowing to Lady Archers in Games 1 and 3 of the series./PN
