MANILA – San Miguel Beermen was having a dilemma on who between Christian Standhardinger and Kiefer Ravena it will choose as top overall selection in the PBA Rookie Draft today in Ermita.
While Beermen earlier expressed willingness to get Standhardinger, the reigning All-Filipino champion was also looking at Ravena, especially since the former will not be available until at least April next year.
SMB got the coveted pick in a trade with Kia Picanto for reserves Ronald Tubid, Jay-R Reyes, Rashawn McCarthy, and the 2019 first round draft pick – a lopsided trade that PBA commissioner Andres Narvasa approved Friday night.
NLEX Road Warriors, which owned the No. 2 overall pick, was expected to pick whoever between Standhardinger and Ravena the Beermen will not choose. But head coach Yeng Guiao had said they wanted the Ilonggo spitfire.
“We have already decided weeks before that we will be selecting Kiefer Ravena,” Guiao earlier said. “It’s hard to pass on a good player like Kiefer, who will really be helpful to our team.”
Blackwater Elite will draft at No. 3 and most likely go for two-time UAAP Finals MVP Jeron Teng, but head coach Leo Isaac said they were also considering forwards Jason Perkins and Raymar Jose.
“Ang hanap talaga namin is big man,” Isaac said. “But since we’re picking No. 3, depende sa mga magiging picks ng mga mauuna samin. Doon maglalaro iyong decision namin.”
Next to Elite were Phoenix Fuel Masters, Alaska Aces, GlobalPort Batang Pier, Rain or Shine Elasto Painters, Fuel Masters, Star Hotshots, TNT KaTropa, Barangay Ginebra San Miguel Kings, and KaTropa.
Picking in the second round were (in order) Road Warriors, Hotshots, Elite, Beermen, Aces, Painters, Hotshots, Fuel Masters, KaTropa, Batang Pier, and Fuel Masters. Picanto and Meralco Bolts will not have a pick until the third round.
Other draft prospects were Davon Potts, Rey Nambatac, Robbie Herndon, Julian Sargent, Thomas Torres, Anton Manuel, Andreas Cahilig, Sidney Onwubere, Lervin Flores, Joseph Gabayni, and Jomari Sollano.
Also listed in the draft were Gwynne Capacio, Louie Vigil, Monbert Arong, Arvie Bringas, Felix Apreku, Dave Moralde, Kyle Neypes, Wilson Baltazar, Roldan Sara, Zach Nicholls, Gabriel Dagangon, John Ervin Grospe, Mark Tallo, and Jon-Jon Gabriel./PN
