ILOILO City – As chairman of the Iloilo City Sports Council, Mayor Jose Espinosa III encouraged the youth to go into sports.
“We have a free sports clinic in La Paz plaza every Saturday in coordination with the Philippine Sports Commission and you can join there,” said Espinosa.
Among the sports being taught are arnis, tennis, football, basketball, volleyball, wushu, and taekwondo.
“We aim to make Iloilo City the sports capital of the Philippines,” said Espinosa.
The city government recently honored nine athletes who represented the metropolis in various sports events. Espinosa handed certificates of recognition to the athletes who bagged medals in the Dumau Philippine International Jiu-jitsu Open and 3rd Asian Pencak Silat Championship.
The gold medalists were:
* Micah Danielle S. Tormon in Teen Rooster Weight, White Belt category
* Zharizh Vele Osimco in Youth Middleweight, White Belt category
* Kendrew Rhoel Uy in Youth Heavyweight, Grey Belt category
* Sean Michael Latabag in Youth Lightweight, Yellow category
* Vincent Velle Osimco in Light Weight Division, Master 1, White Belt category
* Jose Ma. Vargas in Rooster Weight Division, Senior 1, White Belt category
* Emello Galotera in Light Weight Division, Senior 1, Blue Belt category.
They shone at the Dumau Philippine International Jiu-jitsu Open in Cebu City from Oct. 7 to 8.
City hall also cited the following bronze medalists:
* Trisha Marie Leda in Female Class D category
* Haunillio Ballista II in Male Class H category.
Both awardees participated in the 3rd Asian Pencak Silat Championship in South Korea from Sept. 21 to 26.
