ILOILO City – There is a need to revitalize village watchmen who help maintain peace and order in the barangays, said Mayor Jose Espinosa III.
He is meeting barangay captains to emphasize the importance of barangay tanods.
“I would like to encourage barangay captains to strengthen our barangay tanods because their presence is important in serving as force multipliers of the police. They also help during rescue operations,” said Espinosa.
The city government recently cited Alexander Lopez of Barangay Calumpang, Molo district for placing first runner-up in the search for Most Outstanding Tanod (Individual Category) by the Department of the Interior and Local Government (DILG) Region 6 during the 26th Local Government Code Anniversary on Oct. 10.
Espinosa said the city government also plans to procure new equipment, which includes truncheons, for barangay tanods.
Meanwhile, city hall also gave recognition to barangay captains Roberto Niño Jr. of Calumpang, Molo; Barbara Joy Aroza of Nabitasan, La Paz; Releo Lumayad of Rizal, La Paz; and Marjorie Gregorios of Lopez Jaena Norte, La Paz whose team won as regional champion in the LG Quiz-Year IV barangay category.
Barangay Calumpang was also recognized as regional winner of the 2017 Most Outstanding Lupong Tagapamayapa for highly urbanized city and first runner-up in the 2016 National Lupong Tagapamayapa. (Iloilo City PIO/PN)
