MANILA – In a title defense, Negrense Donnie Nietes will face Argentinian Juan Carlos Reveco in an International Boxing Federation (IBF) fight on Jan. 16 in Macau, China.
Nietes’ IBF flyweight belt, which he won at the expense of Thai boxer Komgrich Nantapech in April in Cebu City, is at stake.
The Nietes-Reveco clash was originally planned to be held late this November as part of the Pinoy Pride series but the camps did not come to terms with the playing venue until it was decided to be held in Macau.
“They didn’t want to come over, and we didn’t like the idea of going there either because of what happened to (Filipino Johnriel) Casimero,” said ALA Boxing Promotions head Michael Aldeguer.
Nietes, a 35-year-old native of Murcia, Negros Occidental, is a three-division world champion, having won world championships in minimumweight (105 lbs) and light flyweight (108 lbs) before ruling in flyweight (112 lbs).
He currently has an impressive 40-1-4 win-loss-draw record, including 22 knockout victories.
The Negrense has yet to lose since his defeat to Indonesian Angky Angkotta in 2004.
The 34-year-old Reveco, on the other hand, has a 39-3-0 win-loss-draw record, including 19 stoppage wins. The Argentinian earned the right to face Nietes by beating Nantapech in September./PN
