MANILA – Ilonggo Jhon Rey Sumido thought he would go undrafted until Blackwater Elite chose him as the 43rd and last pick during the PBA Draft on Sunday in Ermita.
Sumido, a native of Zarraga, Iloilo, was the only unselected player left – until Elite called out his name.
“Noong ako na lang natira na hindi napili tapos iyong ibang teams nag-pass na, talagang kinakabahan na ako,” Sumido told Panay News. “Pero good thing na lang at pinili ako ng Blackwater.”
“Although malaking bagay po sa akin na iyong name ko matawag sa PBA Draft, I know naman na walang assurance ito,” he added. “Madami diyan natatawag pero hindi naman nakakapirma.”
Sumido first played basketball for Iloilo Central Commercial High School – now Hua Siong College of Iloilo – where he was recruited to join the national youth basketball team.
In college, Sumido played for several seasons with University of the East Red Warriors in the UAAP. He also played for a number of teams in the PBA D-League – Cobra, Erase Placenta and MP Hotel.
Sumido said he was thankful Elite gave him a chance. Now he fights for roster spot with fellow former University of the East Red Warriors Ephraim Enguio and Emil Renz Palma. Also in the team was another ex-UE cager, Shej Roi Sumang.
“Ako po thankful talaga ako sa Blackwater sa pagkakapili nila sa akin. Gagawin ko ang best ko sa ensayo para ma-consider nila ako sa team,” Sumido said. “I know hindi ito madali. Basta ako ibibigay ko lang ang best ko.”/PN
