UNIVERSITY of St. La Salle – Bacolod captured the University Games men’s football crown after a 4-3 escape from National University Bulldogs at the Gov. Mariano Perdices Memorial Coliseum in Dumaguete City.
After a scoreless regulation, USLS turned to the penalty shots of Charles Barberan, Eli Usman, Ian Perez, and Charles Dabao to reestablish its dominance in the annual event.
USLS goalkeeper John Mark Jamelo also made crucial saves for his squad by blocking three of Bulldogs’ six penalty attempts.
Mentored by Norman Fegidero, the Bacolodnon football team charged to the finals with an unbeaten record.
It had defeated Foundation University (5-1), University of the Philippines (1-0), De La Salle University (2-1), and College of St. Benilde in the semifinals (2-1).
Aside from men’s football, USLS-Bacolod also took home the championship in men’s table tennis. But the school settled for third place in the distaff side behind San Beda College and Rizal Technological University.
RTU bagged four championships – men’s and women’s basketball, men’s beach volleyball, and men’s sepak takraw. Holy Angel University, on the other hand, ruled men’s and women’s taekwondo.
University of Santo Tomas claimed the overall championship in men’s and women’s athletics to add up to its victories in men’s and women’s indoor volleyball./PN
