BACOLOD City – A “welcome home” ceremony was held for the 81 members of the 31st Division Recon Company of the Philippine Army’s 3rd Infantry Division (3ID) who returned from Marawi City.
Gov. Alfredo Marañon Jr. and Vice Gov. Eugenio Lacson of Negros Occidental together 3ID commander Major General Jon Aying and 303rd Infantry Battalion commander Colonel Elizer Losañes led the ceremony at the provincial capitol ground in this city.
Six Negrense members of the Philippine Army Scout Rangers who died during the more-than-five-month siege in Marawi were also recognized during the rites.
The scout rangers were not assigned with the Negros Island-based Army troop. Their families were present during the ceremony.
The 31st Division Recon Company served as a “blocking force and support” for the troopers who were on the main battlefield.
The 81 military personnel were instrumental in providing cover to advance tank assets of the Army.
Marañon congratulated them and assured them that financial assistance to families of those soldiers who died will be given.
Marañon asked the Sangguniang Panlalawigan – led by Lacson – to source the amount that will be used for the financial aid.
For his part, Aying said the returning Army members must rest before being deployed to their previous assignments in the province.
Aying said his men came to Marawi prepared, that’s why there were no casualties from the troop.
He added that the experience his men got from Marawi will boost the military’s anti-insurgency campaign in Negros Island./PN
