MANILA – Veteran guard Chris Tiu once again put his retirement plans on hold after agreeing to stay with Rain or Shine Elasto Painters.
The former Ateneo Blue Eagles star signed a one-year contract to remain as one of the key players for Painters. The team management has not disclosed the contract details.
Tiu, once part of Gilas Pilipinas, wanted to retire early to focus on their family business but his passion for basketball held him back.
The 32-year-old will have a new backup. Painters locked Rey Nambatac – its No. 7 overall pick in the 2017 PBA Draft – down to a three-year deal.
“Chris played a lot of good games for us last conference. Nawalan kami ng offensive weapons kaya his decision to sign a new deal with us was a welcome development,” said Painters head coach Carlos Garcia.
“As for Rey, he is a good scorer. He improved every year in Letran. We see a good upside on his game,” Garcia said. “But he needs bulk up a little and learn to play the point guard position.”
Aside from Tiu and Nambatac, Painters also renewed the contracts of guards Celedonio Trollano and Jireh Ibanes, who was set to return in the upcoming season after being out for a year with injuries.
Painters, a perennial contender during the time of head coach Yeng Guiao, was aiming to improve in the 2017-2018 PBA season after failing to go beyond the quarterfinals in the last three conferences./PN
