CERES Negros moved closer to the top spot of the Philippines Football League after a 6-0 victory against Meralco Manila on Sunday at the Panaad Park and Stadium in Bacolod City.
Fernando Rodriguez finished with a hat-trick, fellow Spanish striker Bienvenido Marañon added a brace and Carlos De Murga chipped in a conversion for the Negros Occidental-based team.
After misfiring in its first few attempts, Ceres went finally on board in the 22nd minute via a long-range hit from Marañon. De Murga doubled the lead five minutes later with a close-range strike.
Ceres widened the lead further just before halftime break when Rodriguez made his first goal before following it up with another from a cross by Jose Porteria.
Rodriguez made his third goal in the 54th from a pass by Iain Ramsay for a 5-0 advantage. Marañon then nailed the final goal for Ceres minutes later with an elegant chip past the defenders.
The victory allowed the Busmen to tighten their hold on the second spot with 51 points on 16 wins, three draws and four losses. Meralco Manila remained on top with 54 points on 16 wins, six draws and four losses.
With still five games remaining on its schedule, the Risto Vidakovic-mentored Ceres may still overtake Meralco Manila for the top spot in the standings heading into the final round in December.
Meanwhile, Stallion Laguna banked on second-half goals by Gabriele Mascazzini and Fitch Arboleda to beat Davao Aguilas 2-0 at the Davao del Norte Sports Complex./PN
