MANILA – Foton Tornadoes took advantage of the undermanned Iriga Lady Oragons to score 25-10, 25-23, 25-19 in their match yesterday at the San Juan Arena and stay unscathed in the Chooks To Go-Philippine Superliga Grand Prix.
Setter Ivy Perez rose to the occasion with 18 excellent sets to go along with seven points, on four attacks and three service aces, for Tornadoes as the defending champion moved to solo first place with a 4-0 win-loss record.
Foton opened the match with a 9-3 lead behind Sara Klisura and Jaja Santiago. Iriga tried to cut the deficit but Tornadoes pulled away anew with conversions from Klisura and Dragana Perunicnic.
Lady Oragons snatched the lead early in the second set but Tornadoes countered with a run from Ivy Perez for a 19-13 lead. Iriga rallied back anew behind Saama Miyagawa for a 23-all knot but back-to-back hits from Foton closed the set.
Tornadoes had another strong start in the third behind Klisura and Santiago for a 15-5 edge. Lady Oragons had its last stand to come close 16-21, and then Tornadoes countered with a finishing run behind Ennajie Laure to end the match.
“We have to take advantage of this momentum by claiming as many wins as possible,” said Tornadoes head coach Moro Branislav. “The tournament will be tougher in the latter period so we must play our best this early.”
Playing for the first time without suspended Grethcel Soltones, Iriga dropped to third place in the standings (1-1)./PN
