MANILA – “King” Arthur Villanueva suffered a sixth-round stoppage defeat to Mexican Luis Nery in their nontitle bout at the Gasmart Stadium in Tijuana, Mexico.
It was the second defeat in three matches this year for the Bago City, Negros Occidental native, the reigning WBO Asia-Pacific bantamweight champion.
Villanueva was aggressive and toe-to-toe with Nery in the first three rounds of the Sunday match. He floored the Mexican in the fourth frame with a huge left straight, stunning many Nery fans.
Nery regained his form in the next round and pummeled Villanueva with combos. The Mexican’s dominance continued in the sixth until the referee – who deemed that the “King” was no longer fighting back – halted the match.
But Villanueva’s camp cried foul, believing that the Negrense boxer was still responding to Nery’s punches.
A victory over the WBC bantamweight champion Nery would have been huge for Villanueva, who may have had his third shot at a world championship.
Villanueva’s win-loss-draw record slid to 31-3-0, including 17 stoppage victories, while Nery kept his unblemished slate 25-0-0, with 19 stoppage wins./PN
