ROXAS City – Two suspected members of a Negros Occidental-based swindling gang were facing estafa charges.
Roxas City police chief Superintendent Dante Tayco said Margeng Magbanua and Ebyang dela Cruz – residents of Barangay Marikudo, Isabela, Negros Occidental – violated Article 15 of the Revised Penal Code.
According to Tayco, Magbanua and dela Cruz introduced themselves as faith healers to the 24-year-old Amybeth Enopia of Barangay V in the city.
Enopia was suffering from stomachache. She sought help from the suspects.
Enopia said Magbanua and dela Cruz demanded from her family P90,000 cash for the “healing procedures.” The suspects said the money will “appease the spirit” causing Enopia’s stomachache.
Enopia’s family only raised P37,000, though.
Enopia’s husband, Gilbert, told the police that Magbanua and dela Cruz placed the money in a white envelope and wrapped it around his wife’s belly.
Magbanua and dela Cruz then told the family that they will go to a church to pray for Enopia’s recovery.
When they left, Gilbert checked the white envelope only to find out that the money was replaced by cut newspaper pieces.
It was found out that Magbanua and dela Cruz took a van to Iloilo City, police said.
The terminal dispatcher, upon learning the crime, called the van driver and told him to proceed to Ivisan town’s police station, where the suspects were arrested.
They were turned over to the Roxas City police station and were detained.
The P37,000 was recovered from them, police said./PN
